Project Team

1. Formal education team

This team interviewed several educational institutions in Japan which had curriculum-based training of Nihon Buyo and researched institutions of China, Taiwan and South Korea to confirm position, curriculum, and educational system of their traditional dances. Using results of the interviews and researches, we will investigate the present situation of teaching system of dance in Japan and make proposals to improve the system or to develop an alternative teaching system of Nihon Buyo.

2. Social education team

This team made public surveys to confirm the present situation of teaching Nihon Buyo and published three reports on the surveys Nihon Buyo Kyouiku. Furthermore, seminars and symposiums on the subjects of body movement, archive or aesthetics were organized every year to make Nihin Buyo popularized. The team will investigate existence values and possibilities of Nihon Buyo in this contemporary Japanese society.

3. The Internet and exhibition team

We are establishing a readily accessible digital archive of photographic images of Kabuki costumes owned by the Art Gallery, Nihon University College of Art. The archive was partly open to public inspection through the Internet and the team will organize an exhibition of the costumes. Furthermore, the team has published animated image of Korean traditional dances owned by the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts.

4. Motion-capture team

This team is investigating characteristics of schools and dancers of Nihon Buyo especially in terms of their styles and movements with the help of impression evaluation and motion analysis. The team organized workshops on Nihon Buyo for students using motion capture equipment in order to examine basic dance skills of them and to digitalize basic movements of Nihon Buyo.

5. 3-D CG team

This team is aiming to create a 3-D CG of Nihon Buyo performance which can present various background sceneries and music to show different impressions at ease. The CG would be created by the synchronization of motional data of Nihon Buyo captured by the motion capture equipment and recorded live music compiled as a music database. Furthermore the team is developing a system for students to find their unskillful movements comparing digitalized data of their performance to that of their masters.

6. International exchange team

With the assistance of APPAN (Asia-Pacific Performing Arts Network), this team organized an international symposium on the subject of Asian dance and recorded Asian dances like Indian Mahari dance by the motion capture equipment. From the international viewpoint, the team will research how we receive and inherit traditional performing arts in order to spread Nihon Buyo to the world.
